With reference to your letter of this date, I am directed by Lord Stanley to state in reply that previous to his departure for China, Mr. Davis informed his Lordship that it was not the intention of Mr. M. Teixeira, who had been appointed his Private Secretary, to take advantage of the advance of Salary which the Lords of the Treasury had consented to make. Sir, I am therefore to request you to move their Lordships to desire that the order for this advance should be cancelled.
